The text in the print is a key passage from St. Augustine’s “Confessions.” The red and blue color scheme references Orthodox iconography. In the Orthodox tradition, red is connected to the earth, symbolizing love and Christ’s sacrifice. Blue is associated with divinity, the heavenly Kingdom, the sky, and eternity. In iconography, Christ is shown with an inner garment of red and and outer garment of blue, symbolizing his incarnate nature as fully God and fully man. I wanted to bring these ideas into my print by having the text in red, representing Augustine’s human journey to encounter Christ, where heaven meets earth.
